All you need to know about Zoysia SOD
At SOD DEPOT OF TAMPA BAY, we offer several high-quality SOD options, including Floratam St. Augustine, Bahia for home landscapes and our premium Zoysia sod, an excellent choice for both residential and commercial use. Zoysia is known for its lush, carpet-like appearance, making it ideal for front yards, golf courses, parks, and any space where a beautiful, dense turf is desired.
This grass features a rich green color and is well-known for its excellent drought tolerance and ability to recover from heavy foot traffic. The best time for planting Zoysia is from late spring through early summer, allowing the grass to establish strong roots before cooler temperatures slow its growth in the fall and winter months.
Originally introduced to the U.S. from Asia, Zoysia is a fine- to medium-textured turfgrass that grows slowly but forms a thick, weed-resistant mat once mature. It spreads through both rhizomes and stolons, often referred to as a "creeping grass," and delivers a uniform, manicured look with minimal input. Zoysia thrives in areas with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day, though some varieties can tolerate partial shade. In colder months, it may enter dormancy and turn brown but will green up again in spring as temperatures rise.
Zoysia performs exceptionally well in Florida’s sunny, humid climate and requires moderate maintenance to stay healthy and attractive. After installation, it typically takes 2 to 3 weeks for the roots to begin establishing. Once rooted, it should be mowed to a height of 1.5 to 2.5 inches. While Zoysia is relatively low-maintenance once mature, regular watering during the establishment period is essential for long-term success. Afterward, it needs only occasional watering and fertilization to maintain its dense, green appearance.
Zoysia is especially suited for residential lawns, common areas, playgrounds, and luxury landscapes where a soft, durable surface is needed. It is also highly effective in erosion control thanks to its thick growth and strong root system. Additionally, Zoysia is naturally resistant to many pests and diseases, making it a dependable choice for those seeking long-lasting, sustainable turf.
In summary, Zoysia sod is a beautiful, dense, and resilient turfgrass perfect for Florida's climate. With its high drought tolerance, heat resistance, and minimal upkeep requirements, Zoysia offers a luxurious yet practical solution for homeowners and property managers alike.
