Guide To A Beautiful Lawn

Continuous Care with the Goal of Providing You with the Best Available SOD!

Garden Hose Sprinkler

Water

Your lawn has been planted with the best sod grown. It doesn’t end there. It will need your help to continue to grow healthy and lush.

The roots of newly laid sod are small, limiting its ability to absorb water. Therefore, it is recommended to water the sod multiple times throughout the day for shorter durations. It is best to schedule watering in the morning and afternoon to minimize the risk of fungal issues that may arise if watered in the late evening or at night.

Fertilizer

Proper Growth Begins With Fertilizer. Chinch bugs are another problem that must be dealt with. Chinch bugs are found on St. Augustine sod, and occasionally Bahia. You may also have to contend with mole crickets, which attack Bahia sod, and army worms. There are insecticides that can be used to bring things under control. If you have shady areas, fertilizing more often with smaller doses and mowing at a higher setting are the best protection. In summary, water regularly, mow with a very sharp mower, fertilize often (March and October), and watch out for any insects and treat that issue if needed. We recommend a good fertilizer with a 16-4-8 analysis. Check your lawn on a weekly basis.

Once the sod is established, usually after one month, apply a fertilizer appropriate for the grass you have chosen. We recommend fertilizing twice a year (October and March) and to use the product called 16-4-8. We advise that you don’t fertilize in summer months.

Many don’t know, but sod cut straight from the farms and laid in your yard will experience stress. During this time you are also going to be giving your sod more water than usual. The added moisture is another reason your new lawn can be prone to diseases. We recommend putting down a good quality fungicide. Your lawn professional should have a product they use, if not, you can purchase one on your own either online or at a big box store. As with all products used on your lawn, please follow labeled instructions properly to receive the best care possible for the sod.

Weeds

At first, there will be very few weeds in your new lawn. Over time, weeds will sprout, making fertilizer coverage paramount. if you see weeds in just a couple of areas, regular mowing can take care of your issue. A strong, sharp mower used on well-fed lawns will keep most weeds under control. Rotary mowers can handle tall grass with ease, but if it is not kept sharp, you will run into problems. Sharpening the blades before each usage is critical. Reel mowers are another type of mower used, and have several blades and can reduce the appearance of fungus.

Warranty Clause

  • Sod Depot of Tampa Bay offers no written warranties on sod. Once the sod has been delivered it’s out of our hands. There are many factors out of our control once the sod leaves the farms. We believe that our customers will do the proper research regarding the best care for their sod and to do further research when choosing which sod will best fit their needs.

  • Please note that the worst time of the year to install sod is May-September. There is an 80-90 percent chance that the sod will get fungus or sod web worms or even both. We strongly recommend that you hire a lawn professional to spray your sod for fungus and insect problems.

  • Sod should be installed right after it has been delivered. The longer you leave the sod on the pallet the worst it will look.

  • Bahia Sod will at times have fire ants, weeds, cow patties and falls apart when picking it off the pallet. Bahia Sod needs to be installed within 48 hours!
