Caring for Seville St. Augustine & What to Expect
Seville St. Augustine is a low-growing, fine-textured grass with a dark green to blue-green color. The best time to establish this grass is spring to early summer, when warmer temperatures support strong root development and active growth.
All you need to know about Seville St. Augustine SOD
At SOD DEPOT OF TAMPA BAY, we offer a variety of high-quality SOD options, including the versatile Seville St. Augustine, an ideal choice for shadier residential areas, commercial properties, and common spaces. Known for its compact growth and vibrant color, Seville delivers a clean, manicured look that enhances the appearance of any landscape.
This grass features a dark green to blue-green hue and a fine-textured, low-growing blade, giving it a soft feel and polished appearance. Seville is moderately drought-tolerant and performs well in partially shaded areas, making it especially well-suited for lawns surrounded by trees or buildings. The best time for planting is from spring through early summer, which allows the sod to take root before the high heat of midsummer or cooler fall and winter temperatures slow its growth.
A popular dwarf variety of St. Augustine, Seville is easily recognized by its narrow blades and horizontal growth habit, giving it a dense, carpet-like surface. To thrive, Seville needs at least 4–6 hours of filtered sunlight per day, making it more shade-tolerant than many other warm-season grasses. During colder months, it may lose some of its color and enter dormancy, but it will regain its vibrant green as temperatures warm in the spring.
Seville St. Augustine grass grows exceptionally well in Florida’s humid, subtropical climate but does require regular maintenance to keep it healthy and attractive. After installation, the sod typically begins to establish within 2 to 3 weeks, at which point it should be mowed to a height of 2 to 2.5 inches. Consistent watering during the establishment period is crucial, especially in dry conditions, but care should be taken to avoid overwatering, which can lead to fungal issues. Once established, Seville needs routine watering, mowing, and periodic fertilization to maintain its dense appearance and resist weed growth.
While often used for home lawns and community green spaces, Seville is also a strong choice for common areas, playgrounds, and light commercial use. It offers a lush, attractive turf that stands up well to foot traffic when properly cared for. Though not as pest- or disease-resistant as some varieties, with proper care and good cultural practices, Seville can remain vibrant and healthy year-round.
Seville sod is a beautiful and versatile turfgrass ideal for warm climates and partially shaded landscapes. It combines moderate drought tolerance, good shade performance, and a fine texture for a high-end look. With regular maintenance and care, Seville St. Augustine offers a long-lasting, visually appealing lawn solution for both residential and light commercial applications.
