All you need to know about Palmetto® St. Augustine SOD
At SOD DEPOT OF TAMPA BAY, we proudly offer Palmetto® St. Augustine, one of the most versatile and widely trusted turfgrass varieties available today. Known for its fine texture, vibrant green color, and exceptional shade tolerance, Palmetto is a top choice for residential lawns, commercial properties, parks, and community areas throughout Florida and the Southeast.
Palmetto features a soft, lush appearance with a bright, emerald-green hue and a finer blade than traditional St. Augustine varieties. It grows in a low, horizontal pattern, creating a dense, carpet-like lawn that delivers a clean, polished look with a soft feel underfoot. One of Palmetto’s standout traits is its impressive adaptability—it performs well in full sun but also thrives in partial shade, requiring as little as 4–5 hours of sunlight per day, making it ideal for properties with trees, buildings, or other shaded areas.
The best time to install Palmetto is from late spring through early summer, when soil temperatures are optimal for quick root development. Once established, Palmetto spreads using vigorous stolons that allow it to fill in bare spots and create a uniform surface. While it does not have built-in herbicide tolerance, its dense growth habit naturally helps reduce weed invasion, especially when maintained properly.
Palmetto is well-suited for Florida’s subtropical climate, with strong resistance to heat and moderate drought tolerance. It’s also more cold-tolerant than many other St. Augustine varieties, helping it retain color longer into the cooler months. During dormancy in winter, the grass may fade slightly in color but will bounce back as temperatures warm in spring.
Palmetto handles light to moderate foot traffic and is a great option for family lawns, garden paths, play areas, and ornamental landscapes. To keep it looking its best, Palmetto should be mowed at a height of 2 to 2.5 inches. It benefits from routine watering and seasonal fertilization, particularly during establishment and during hot, dry periods.
After installation, Palmetto typically begins to root within 2 to 3 weeks, provided it receives consistent watering and is protected from heavy traffic. Once established, it becomes relatively low-maintenance and can thrive with less water and fewer chemical inputs than many other warm-season grasses.
In summary, Palmetto St. Augustine offers a perfect balance of beauty, adaptability, and ease of care, making it a go-to turfgrass solution for Florida homeowners and landscapers alike. With its ability to handle shade, sun, and a variety of conditions, Palmetto delivers lasting curb appeal and a comfortable, resilient lawn that fits seamlessly into Florida’s landscapes and lifestyles.
