Caring for Argentine Bahia Sod & What to Expect
Bahia is medium green in color and is drought tolerant. The best time to establish this grass is spring to early summer.
All you need to know about Argentine Bahia SOD
At SOD DEPOT OF TAMPA BAY offer several sod options, including Floratam St. Augustine for home landscapes and our widely used Argentine Bahia sod, ideal for commercial and agricultural areas. Argentine Bahia gives a clean, neat appearance, making it a great choice for highway medians or expansive fields.
This grass has a medium green hue and is highly tolerant to drought. The ideal time for planting is from spring through early summer, allowing it to take root before the extreme summer heat or the cooler temperatures of fall and winter slow its growth.
Argentine Bahia, introduced to Florida from Argentina in 1945, is a broad-leaf variety of Bahia grass. It's easily recognized by its distinctive V-shaped blades and is often called a "creeping grass" due to its low-growing habit. To grow successfully, it needs at least eight hours of sunlight each day. During colder months, the grass may lose its vibrant color and turn brown, but it will green up again as temperatures rise in the spring.
Argentine Bahia grass thrives in Florida’s sun-drenched climate but does require moderate upkeep to stay healthy and attractive. Once the root system is established—typically within 2 to 3 weeks—it’s recommended to mow the grass to a height of 2 to 3 inches. Although Bahia has a strong, deep root system and becomes fairly low-maintenance once established, it’s important to water it regularly during the germination period to help roots take hold and grow strong. After that, it generally needs minimal watering and fertilization.
While primarily used as a hardy ground cover, this sod is also effective for erosion control in areas with poor or unstable soil. It is naturally resistant to most pests and diseases, which makes it a reliable option for large-scale or utility-focused landscapes.
However, Argentine Bahia is not recommended for residential lawns, playgrounds, or common areas. It lacks the soft, dense feel of other turf types and isn't ideal for recreational use. Its coarse texture can also cause wear on standard lawnmower blades, requiring more frequent sharpening and maintenance. Additionally, Bahia is more susceptible to weed intrusion and doesn't provide the lush, polished look many homeowners prefer.
